Because human nature is to err and stumble.

The back road- Rachel Abbott- an intricate plot showing human weaknesses and shortcomings. A story told from the point of view of several people. Because human nature is to err and stumble. The art is to survive adversity and recover after falling.

When a teenager in Little Melham is hit by car and left unattended at the side of the road, the whole town holds its breath. Who could do something so beastly? Who has enough darkness to escape the scene of the accident as if nothing had happened?

Former Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas, who has just bought a small house in the village, accepts an invitation to dinner with new neighbours in the evening after the accident. There he meets a whole group of friends and acquaintances, each of whom has a more or less complicated story. When things start to gain momentum, Tom and one of the characters try to solve the accident on their own. They do not know, however, that apart from the unfortunate accident, they will have to deal with domestic violence, murder, blackmail and another attempted murder.

The complexity of the characters and the attempts to cover up the actual intentions of subsequent characters were what captivated me most in my history. Rachel Abbott, already known for her excellent narrative of difficult and unpleasant to read topics, sets the bar high this time. The whole picture is completed by the figure of one of my favourite book detectives (detective Robert Hunter-Chris Carter), who in no way resembles a stern policeman ready to put you behind bars at any moment.

Well written- good to be read! Enjoy!
